Sprint recently announced a contract renewal with Nortel that calls for the vendor to provide equipment and professional support for the continued expansion of the carrier’s 3G wireless network. The contract is worth about $1 billion over three years. Under the agreement, Nortel will provide CDMA2000 1X radio base stations, base station controllers, switching platforms and other related equipment.
Sprint also will expand its wireless packet data service offerings by deploying Nortel’s Packet Data Service Node. Nortel also will provide CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in “several key markets,” the company said. Sprint plans to launch EV-DO service in the majority of its top U.S. metropolitan markets in 2005.
