Motorola launches new mobile, portable
LAS VEGAS–Motorola introduced during last week’s IWCE 2006 conference in Las Vegas the BPR40 two-way portable radio and the PM1500 high-power, two-way mobile radio.
Part of the newly created Mag One line, the BPR40 provides eight channels, 12 programmable features and high/low power options. It is targeted to “cost-conscious” users in the hospitality, education and retail sectors, said Craig Chenicek, director of Motorola Radio Products.
“We’re trying to create products that meet both their economic and performance expectations. Historically, if someone needed a certain coverage level, they’d have to step up to a price that might be out of their range, so therefore they’d have to compromise performance,” Chenicek said. “So we’ve stripped out the bells and whistles … and come out with a strong-spec radio without all of the enhanced capability and rugged reliability of a higher-tier radio.”
The BPR 40 has a suggested retail price of $250.
The PM1500 VHF/UHF mobile for the public-safety sector offers 225 channels, 110 W of power and can be made Project 25 compatible though a software upgrade. An added benefit is that the radio’s transceiver can be mounted in the vehicle’s trunk, while the control head stays up in the cab near the driver, Chenicek said.
“As police vehicles become more technology laden, space becomes critical,” he said.
The PM1500 will retail for about $1700.
