Houston still lacks license for radio system
Although work on Houston's new $132 million public-safety radio system has been under way since 2003, city project leaders have not yet obtained an FCC license for the system and instead are borrowing radio frequency from state police.
From the Houston Chronicle: Although work on Houston’s new $132 million public-safety radio system has been under way since 2003, city project leaders have not yet obtained an FCC license for the system and instead are borrowing radio frequency from state police. The city’s project manager insists the project remains on schedule but acknowledged “hiccups” on the way to making the fire and police component of the system operational by the spring 2012 target date. The radio system, which will tie together 15,000 city radios to other agencies, is a crucial part of Mayor Annise Parker’s strategy to boost public safety on Houston streets by enabling other area law enforcement to respond to Houston Police Department calls for service.
