Homeowners raise smart-meter concerns
From the Chicago Sun Times: Homeowners in California and Texas are raising concerns over smart meters, questioning their accuracy, feared health effects, the newness of the technology and Big Brother edicts.
Santa Cruz County, Calif., and the cities of Scotts Valley and San Francisco asked the state to stop the local utility, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), from installing the smart meters until a study of their accuracy is completed.
The California Public Utilities Commission has hired a company to conduct an independent investigation that will test smart meters in the lab and in the field for a variety of problems, including software that accidentally reboots, improperly calibrated modules and incorrect meter installation.
Meanwhile, Texas homeowners have complained loudly about the meters’ accuracy, blaming them for skyrocketing electric bills.
Dallas-based Oncor Electric Delivery hired an independent third party to analyze the smart meters.
