EPRI report quantifies smart-grid opportunities
From Connected Planet: A report from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) shows that the organization has upped its estimate of both smart grid deployment costs and the anticipated return on that investment — which they now say will exceed costs by 2.8 to 6 times.
The EPRI estimates total smart-grid deployment costs at between $337 to $476 billion, which the organization says will generate a return of between $1.3 to $2.3 trillion.
A portion of total deployment costs will go toward the communications infrastructure supporting it — and service providers hope that some of those dollars will be spent with them. The EPRI estimates, for example, that between $2.3 and $3.4 billion will be spent on communications infrastructure for smart substations, with another $668 million going toward substation communications.
