NetMotion releases new version of mobile VPN
NetMotion Wireless today announced the release of Mobility XE 9.5, the latest version of its popular mobile virtual private network (VPN) product that features IPv6 support, enhanced security and improved analytics that can be leveraged by all enterprises.
“This release is really interesting, because we’re seeing changes in the environment that our public-safety customer and larger markets are living in,” Steve Fallin, senior product manager for NetMotion Wireless, said during an interview with Urgent Communications. “Things are changing, so this release is all about supporting the networks that we see evolving and the security standards that we see evolving.”
One of the big transitions in the marketplace is the shift from IPv4 networks and those that support IPv6, Fallin said. NetMotion has developed Mobility XE in a manner so that a user moving between IPv4 and IPv6 networks will not experience any changes in performance for that reason, he said.
“For the folks in the field, nobody wants to have to explain to them the difference between IPv4 and IPv6 and why it might be relevant,” Fallin said. “So, what we’ve done is make the roaming between the networks as seamless as the roaming we do today between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.”
Another priority for enterprises is security, and Mobility XE 9.5 currently is the only mobile VPN solution that supports National Security Agency (NSA) Suite B encryption, which is required for federal network handling secret information, Fallin said. While NSA Suite B encryption may not required for other enterprises, utilizing this standard will satisfy security auditors.
“[It] is a tremendous boon to our user base, because they don’t have to think about it,” Fallin said. “The NSA has already done all the heavy lifting in validating this cryptography.”
In addition, Mobility XE 9.5 is undergoing Common Criteria EAL4+ certification, which is an internationally recognized set of guidelines used to evaluate security features and capabilities.
Another feature of Mobility XE 9.5 is an enhanced analytics module that is “fully self-contained” and does not require database-management expertise to use. Making its product easier to use is an ongoing goal of NetMotion Wireless as it attempts to meet the needs of the mobile VPN market, according to Fallin, who noted the critical nature of field workers for all enterprises.
“The people that [enterprises] put in the field are primarily non-technical, they’re working in many places throughout the day,” he said.”And the apps that they’re using are the apps that are responsible either for keeping people safe or for generating revenue, depending on which sector you’re in.”
