Next-generation 911 will enable public-safety answering points (PSAPs) to offer text messaging and data services, but planning discussions about the future of 911 shouldn’t focus solely on the technology, according to David Jones, a consultant with Mission Critical Partners.

But Jones’ key message was a simple one that he reiterated throughout his presentation, as he attempted to reach those who plan to postpone the transition process until it is required.
“Next-generation 911 is going to happen,” Jones said. “It is happening right now … You can either be a part of the solution—and be a part in determining how you apply it in your respective jurisdiction—or you can sit back and be affected by the change.
“Understand that the technology and the transition from legacy 911 systems to IP telephony is happening. You can’t stop it. The economics, the technologies are guiding this … We all have a responsibility, as 911 professionals, to realize that we should move forward on this now.”
