By David Kahn — Earlier this year I attended NIST’s 700 MHz Public Safety Broadband Demonstration Stakeholders Meeting, where very smart people presented their visions for the national LTE/4G network. However there seemed to be a few elephants in the room that largely were ignored.

Like most in the public-safety industry, none of the panelists expressed confidence about how long LMR and LTE systems will need to co-exist in the public-safety sector, but the general consensus was that it will be at least a decade.

Public safety is allowed to partner with utilities on its nationwide broadband network, but such partners only are allowed to access the network on a secondary basis. Exactly what “secondary” means is the critical question.

The state of Wisconsin yesterday conducted a ceremony celebrating the launch of its interoperable, statewide P25 system known as the Wisconsin Interoperable System for Communications (WISCOM) that features a network backbone from EFJohnson.

There are some who believe that the public-safety broadband network is much more a law-enforcement play, and that the fire and emergency medical services won’t benefit nearly as much. I am certain that those people are wrong.

Va. county awards Harris $10M contract for P25 network

The Harris P25IP 700 MHz radio system will provide secure and reliable communications for the more than 1,000 first responders across the Pittsylvania County’s 978 square miles.
