Cisco launches City Operations Center platform
Other key features of the new platform are an open user interface that integrates information from all of the data sources and the ability to monitor information on remote servers, according to Raffetto.
Although the City Operations Center moniker implies usage by a municipality, one of the most successful deployments of the Cisco System platform has been with the Korea South-East Power, which wanted to optimize video feeds from about 1,500 cameras located at six remote power plants, Raffetto said.
“In the first three months of having the system deployed, they were able to see 207 anomalies in their system, which resulted in approximately $700,000 in savings, just by being able to proactively manage those errors,” Raffetto said. “With their minimized system downtime, they saw savings of approximately $500,000.
“And, because they had this proactive system in place, they were able to prevent major accidents that resulted in savings of $2 million for every potential major accident that could have caused property loss.”
With all of these savings, the Korean utility was able to realize its return on the investment in the Cisco Systems’ platform in “about six months,” Khetrapal said.
