Nextel Communications reported its fourth straight quarterly profit – after more than a decade of losses.
Company officials attributed the success to a growing customer base willing to pay more for its Direct Connect walkie-talkie feature.
Nextel pulled in $208 million in the first quarter of 2003, compared to a loss of $654 million in the same quarter a year ago.
Nextel President and CEO Tim Donahue insisted that the company’s performance puts Nextel “solidly on track to meet or exceed our financial and operating goals for 2003.”
The company added 480,000 subscribers in the quarter, giving it 11 million overall.
