APCO presents letters to FCC regarding wireless-enhanced 9-1-1
Daytona Beach, FL—At a press conference in Washington, APCO presented letters from PSAPs from cities throughout the United States to the FCC. The letters were intended to establish initial dialogue with wireless telephone carriers, illustrating the PSAP’s willingness to take all necessary steps to receive location information from wireless 9-1-1 calls.
The FCC has adopted rules that require wireless carriers to provide PSAPs with location information. Phase I of the rules requires provision of cell-site location and callback numbers. Phase II requires more specific information.
To help assist with wireless-enhanced 9-1-1 implementation, APCO initiated Project LOCATE (Project 38) to help the nation’s PSAPs request Phase II services from cellular carriers. APCO hopes to eliminate carrier claims that they have not received requests to provide this service.
