ITA leadership moves to cancel conference
The Industrial Telecommunications Association has canceled the 2001 Private Wireless Spectrum Management Conference and Exposition after what ITA President Laura Smith said was “careful consideration of all the relevant issues, as well as consultation with the leadership of ITA, USMSS and CICS.” On Sept. 12, ITA had postponed the conference, which was originally to be held Sept. 19–21 at the Grand Hyatt in Washington.
Smith said that, after further discussions with exhibitors, volunteer leadership and the ITA staff, and after conversations with the Grand Hyatt, the association determined that no alternative dates were available that would ensure a safe and productive meeting this year. Scheduling difficulties, the availability of unencumbered air travel and the uncertain political and civil situation all played a part in the decision.
“While the safety of our members is our primary concern, we also take very seriously our responsibility to produce a quality event that enhances marketing opportunities for our exhibitors and educational resources for our attendees. Unfortunately, in light of our current national crisis, that opportunity is not going to be available this year,” Smith said.
All exhibit and registration fees paid for the conference will be refunded. ITA will be processing refunds immediately and should complete the process within two weeks.
The 2002 Private Wireless Conference will take place Nov. 6–9 at the Mariott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington.
“The cancellation of our annual conference is a small event compared to the tragedy suffered by many thousands across our country. As will all of you, ITA is dedicating much of its resources to assisting where it can, particularly here in our own community, which was a target of one of the attacks. While we cannot change the events of last week, we can and will commit ourselves toward a better and more secure future,” Smith said.
