Nextel Communications has tested push-to-talk technology that would allow the carrier’s customers to speak with customers of other wireless carriers that use P2T solutions on CDMA networks, such as Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS and Asian wireless operators, according to a recent Reuters story.
Known as QChat, the technology is based on a Qualcomm solution and is built by network equipment manufacturer Lucent Technologies. Nextel, which was the first carrier to introduce the P2T feature, has exclusive rights to use the QChat system it is testing for an unspecified period of time. Nextel did not indicate when it might introduce a handset that features QChat.
