Broadcom Corp. unveiled a new Wi-Fi Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) processor that extends its Intensi-fi family of draft-802.11n solutions. The addition of a GbE controller as well as an increase in the processor’s clock speed can deliver the “theoretical maximum wireless 802.11n performance, nearly eight times that of 802.11g,” according to the company.

AirLink announces new product suite
Fixed- and mobile-wireless data systems provider AirLink Communications announced the X Platform, its next-generation, rugged wireless communications and networking product suite. The first two products are the Raven X and the PinPoint X. Both devices are certified as intrinsically safe for use in hazardous environments, the company said. The Raven has serial and Ethernet interfaces, while the PinPoint has peripheral connections — including serial, Ethernet and USB — as well as a 16-channel GPS receiver. It also meets military standards for vibration, shock, drop, high and low temperature and humidity, according to AirLink.

Tracking devices transmit data through GSM
Wireless machine-to-machine technology developer Archetype launched TerraTrace, an asset-tracking system that provides real-time location and status information. According to the company, it uses a small onboard GPS tracking device, which transmits data through wireless GSM frequencies to a secure data center and is accessible by authorized users via a secure Internet connection.

Panasonic Mobile Communications has developed a radio-wave propagation simulation system for next-generation wireless communication systems, including 3G. Massload Technologies now offers a wireless version of its Ultraslim Weighpads, used for weighing commercial truckers’ loads. The 0.7-inch-thick portable pad has 20 independent micro-load cells in each pad, can support up to eight channels and has a battery life of up to 200 operating hours. It can be attached to a display system using a Palm hand-held with Massload wireless desktop software or to obtain readings, according to the company.
