UHF data radio modem

Raveon Technologies launched the StingRay, a UHF data radio modem designed for telemetry, SCADA, AVL, wireless data, GPS and remote control applications. It features 1 to 5 watts of RF output in the 450-480 MHz band, a maximum communication range of 50 miles and programmable over-the-air data rates of 1200 to 1920 b/s. It was developed for the public safety and utilities market and may be ordered with an IP65 weatherproof enclosure. It costs less than $400 per unit, according to the company.

Software-configurable antenna control unit

Radio Frequency Systems announced the introduction of the Optimizer Universal, a software-configurable antenna control unit (ACU) that lets network operators monitor and control tower-top operations, either at the tower base or from a network operations center. The formal unveiling of the device, which is part of the company’s Optimizer RT remote tower-top control system, will occur at the Mobile World Congress exhibition to be held in Barcelona, Spain, in February. The solution is designed to save network operators money when executing protocol conversions by eliminating the labor-intensive change out of tower-top ACU hardware, the company said.

Test solution for LTE gear

Agilent Technologies introduced the 3GPP LTE modulation analysis solution for RF and modulation testing of long-term evolution (LTE) transceivers and components. When used in conjunction with the company’s 89600 Series vector signal analysis software, the solution provides analysis of both uplink (SC-FDMA) and downlink (OFDMA) signals, which lets engineers perform transmitter measurements on both the base station and the mobile station using the same solution. The solution supports all LTE bandwidths up to 20 MHz with Type 1 FDD frame structure, supports all modulation formats and sequences, and analyzes any antenna ports defined for the downlink transmitter, the company said.

RFID security platform

Atmel Corp. of San Jose, Calif., announced the CryptoRF, a 13.56 MHz RFID solution that features a 64-bit cryptographic engine and a mutual authentication feature, which together make it more difficult for counterfeiters to ply their craft. According to the company, said labels and tags based on the CryptoRF solution are “virtually impossible to copy.” The solution is targeted to sectors prone to counterfeiting, such as high-value consumer goods and software, and to sectors that require a high level of product tracking, such as pharmaceuticals.

Atmel also announced an initiative with SkyeTek of Westminster, Colo., to develop an RFID security demonstration kit based on the CryptoRF family of products and SkyeTek’s SkyeModule M2 RFID reader.

Finally, Atmel announced the ATA8x0x family of UHF ASK/FSK receivers and transmitters. Applications include remote controls for consumer and industrial systems; access control, alarm and telemetry systems; energy metering; and active RFID tagging systems, the company said.

DC/AC inverter

Wilmore Electronics announced that its low profile, 1000-VA DC-to-AC inverters are now available with an optional built-in automatic load switchover feature that lets them operate in uninterruptible power supply or stand-by modes. The devices fit in 19- or 23-inch racks and are available in 24, 48 and 130 VDC input versions. They are designed for use in telecommunications, SCADA and security applications where a stable and reliable source of AC power needs to be derived from a battery system, the company said.

Portable radios

Tait Radio Communications introduced the IP67-rated TP8100 series of radios, which includes 5 W VHF and 4 W UHF versions. The conventional TP8120 and trunked TP8410 are full 16-key radios, while the conventional TP8115 and trunked TP8135 are available with limited keypads. All four feature a 24-character LCD display screen, Windows programming software and a 2000 mAh lithium-ion battery. All radios in the series exceed MIL-STD 810F and are targeted to sectors where dust, dirt and rain are issues, including utilities, mining ports and public transportation, the company said.

2.4 GHz software, signal-generator products

Kaltman Creations unveiled its AirSleuth Pro 2.4 GHz radio frequency spectrum analyzer software package, as well as its AirHorn 2.4 GHz, 11-channel signal generator designed for microwave and RF applications. The signal generator transmits RF signals for each of the 11 Wi-Fi (802.11) channels and was developed for manufacturers working in research and development of antenna design and for those testing RF shielding performance and antenna positioning, the company announced.

Point-to-point bridge

Proxim Wireless unveiled the QuickBridge 60250, a point-to-point wireless bridge that provides 200 Mb/s of capacity in the 60 GHz unlicensed band. The bridge includes the radio units, mounting hardware, power injectors and cables needed to deploy a wireless connection operating over distances of up to 500 meters, according to the company.
