Meru, Aircell provide air-to-ground, mid-air virtual wireless network
Meru Networks, a provider of 802.11n virtualized wireless LAN solutions for enterprise networking, and Aircell, a provider of inflight connectivity, announced commercial deployment of Meru’s virtualized wireless solution on aircrafts equipped with Aircell’s Gogo® Inflight Internet Service. More than 35 aircrafts already are equipped with Meru’s virtualized wireless solution and this will expand to several hundred by the end of the year.
Aircell won the FCC auction for air-to-ground broadband frequencies in 2006.<
Meru’s virtualized wireless solutions are certified by the FAA for use on all major commercial aircraft. In a Meru network, neighboring access points all operate on the same channel and can transmit at the maximum power allowed by the FCC and similar regulatory agencies worldwide.
